Safety concerns still linger as Lac-Mégantic marks 12th anniversary of rail tragedy

As the citizens of Lac-Mégantic, Que., solemnly marked the 12th anniversary of the tragic rail disaster that claimed the lives of 47 people in 2013, concerns about rail safety in the town still linger. Despite the town’s efforts to honor the victims with lowered flags, flowers, and a moment of silence, there is a pressing need for more action to prevent future disasters.

Robert Bellefleur, a spokesperson for a citizens’ rail safety group, expressed his apprehensions about the town’s safety in the face of longer and heavier trains that now traverse the area. He highlighted the lack of progress in building a promised bypass to divert trains from the city’s core, emphasizing that the existing rail lines were not designed to accommodate the massive trains of today.

Bellefleur warned that these “monster” trains pose a significant risk not only to Lac-Mégantic but to other communities as well. Recent observations of wear and erosion near railway culverts have only added to the concerns of residents, despite reassurances from the Canadian Pacific Kansas City railway about the safety of the tracks.

The devastating derailment and fire in 2013 not only destroyed much of the downtown core but also led to the evacuation of thousands of residents and a massive oil spill. The incident underscored the urgent need for a rail bypass, which was promised by the federal and provincial governments in 2018 but has yet to materialize due to regulatory delays and community opposition.

Transport Minister Chrystia Freeland acknowledged the importance of the bypass project in her statement marking the anniversary, pledging to prioritize its completion. However, Bellefleur expressed skepticism about yet another promise, noting the long history of unfulfilled commitments from successive transport ministers.

As Lac-Mégantic continues to mourn the lives lost in the tragedy, the call for improved rail safety measures and the construction of a bypass grows louder. The town’s resilience and determination to rebuild in the face of adversity serve as a poignant reminder of the importance of ensuring the safety and well-being of all communities.
