SailGP announces high-speed race will return to Halifax in 2026

The highly anticipated international sailing competition known as SailGP is set to make a triumphant return to Halifax in June 2026. This exciting event will mark the second time that Halifax has hosted the prestigious competition, following its successful Canadian debut in 2024. The 2024 event drew in tens of thousands of spectators who flocked to both sides of the harbour to witness the thrilling high-speed racing action.

SailGP recently announced Halifax as one of the ten race locations for the upcoming season, with the specific dates yet to be revealed. The competition features teams from various nations competing in identical 15-metre catamarans equipped with rigid sails that harness the wind with precision, allowing speeds to reach up to 100 km/h. The boats navigate a challenging course, showcasing the skill and agility of the sailors.

Billy Gooderham, the “flight controller” for Canada’s SailGP team, expressed his excitement for the return to Halifax, emphasizing the immense support from the Nova Scotia community. Gooderham, a native of Nova Scotia, highlighted the province’s rich maritime culture and deep-rooted connection to the ocean, making Halifax an ideal venue for the event.

Last year’s SailGP event in Halifax saw an estimated 50,000 spectators in attendance, leading to the unprecedented shutdown of marine and air traffic to accommodate the racing activities. SailGP CEO Russell Coutts praised Halifax as a top fan favorite, noting the record-breaking shoreline crowds from the previous event.

In addition to Halifax, the 2026 SailGP season will include stops in various locations such as Australia, the United Arab Emirates, Rio, Bermuda, New York, Great Britain, and France, with more cities and dates to be confirmed. The rapid sell-out of tickets for the 2024 event in Halifax indicated the high demand for the competition, with a majority of attendees coming from outside the city.
