Saint Mary’s names new president as university grapples with enrolment, financial woes

Saint Mary’s University is pleased to announce the appointment of Michael Khan as its next president and vice-chancellor. Khan will officially take on the role as the 35th president of Saint Mary’s on July 1, as the Halifax-based institution grapples with financial challenges stemming from inflation, funding issues, and a decline in international student enrollment.

According to data from the Association of Atlantic Universities, Saint Mary’s has experienced a 12% decrease in student enrollment over the past decade. Current president Robert Summerby-Murray acknowledged in the university’s annual financial report dated March 31, 2024, that Saint Mary’s is facing declining enrollments and financial pressures, resulting in year-over-year deficits and the erosion of the General Fund.

To address these financial concerns, the school’s executive management team has developed a multi-year plan aimed at restoring financial stability. However, in April 2024, the faculty union called for Summerby-Murray’s resignation, citing a lack of transparency surrounding financial issues, cutbacks, and capital project spending. The university reported an operating deficit of $9.8 million in 2023.

In light of recent challenges, Saint Mary’s faces further financial strain following the federal government’s reduction in international student permits. Summerby-Murray warned faculty members in an email that the university could see a potential revenue decline of $5 million to $6 million from first-year international tuition alone.

Despite these challenges, Michael Khan expressed his excitement at joining Saint Mary’s University, stating that he was “honored and delighted” to be part of the institution known for its excellence in research, teaching, and community engagement. Khan brings a wealth of experience to his new role, having served as provost and academic vice-president at Trent University since 2020. In June 2024, Trent University announced Khan’s recommitment for a second five-year term.

Prior to his time at Trent, Khan held leadership positions at the University of Windsor and Bangor University in Wales, where he oversaw various academic departments and programs. With his background in academia and administration, Khan is poised to lead Saint Mary’s through these challenging times and uphold the university’s commitment to student success and academic excellence.
