SaltWire criticizes Free Palestine protesters for co-opting spot in Parade of Lights

SaltWire has condemned the co-opting of the Holiday Parade of Lights on Saturday in Halifax by a group of Palestinian supporters.

“Such actions not only divert from the spirit and joy of the holiday season but also inappropriately expose young children to complex political discourse in a setting meant for celebration and unity,” the media company and organizer of the annual parade said in a news release Monday.

“About 150,000 members of the public attending the annual parade witnessed a group of five or six protesters insert themselves along the Halifax parade route carrying placards calling for a ceasefire in Gaza as well as chanting ‘from the river to the sea’ and handing out postcards addressed to members of Parliament, as well as candy for children.”

SaltWire said it reiterates its firm stance against all forms of hatred, including anti-Semitism.

“We believe in promoting a community where respect and understanding towards all cultures and beliefs are paramount. Using a festive, family-oriented event to promote any political agenda, particularly in a manner that could be construed as divisive, is deeply disappointing and contrary to the values of inclusivity and harmony that we hold dear.

“We urge all parties to respect the sanctity of cultural and festive events and to engage in political expression in more appropriate forums, where open and respectful dialogue can be fostered without overshadowing the joy and innocence of childhood celebrations.”
