Salty about not finding road salt? You’re not alone

Dartmouth Residents Struggle to Find Road Salt Ahead of Winter Storm
As another winter storm looms over Dartmouth, residents like Mitch Fong are scrambling to find road salt to prepare for the icy conditions. Fong visited three stores in Dartmouth Crossing on Sunday in search of road salt, but he left empty-handed.
“It’s been a hot commodity,” Fong remarked, reflecting the high demand for salt as the storm approaches.
CBC meteorologist Ryan Snoddon has warned that the upcoming storm will bring “a messy mix of ice pellets, freezing rain, and rain,” further emphasizing the need for road salt to prevent hazardous road conditions.
Fong expressed frustration over the lack of proper street cleaning following the last storm on Thursday, predicting that the streets will only worsen with the accumulation of a second layer of ice and snow.
“Today I walked the dog, I saw so many people fall,” Fong shared. “There’s not a lot being done to make the sidewalk safe for people.”
Free Salt Offered in Spryfield
While Fong struggled to find salt at stores, a landscaping company in Spryfield took a generous initiative by giving away road salt to the community. Ali Alizy, the owner of Carlton Landscaping, decided to offer free salt after witnessing the urgent need in his neighborhood.
Alizy mentioned that his company typically sells salt in preparation for winter storms, but the overwhelming demand prompted him to distribute over 1,300 kilograms of salt for free.
“Everybody we were delivering salt to, they were super grateful,” Alizy shared, highlighting the positive impact of the gesture on the community.
Due to the high demand, Alizy initially limited the distribution to one bucket per person. However, the line of residents in front of his pickup truck grew significantly, leading to a depletion of their salt supply.
