SALTZMAN: Mexico City hosts first-ever consumer electronics show

As our climates may vary dramatically, Canada and Latin America (LATAM) are facing a common challenge today – U.S. tariff issues. Companies in both markets are actively seeking to strengthen relationships outside of the United States in response to ongoing tariff disputes and trade policy uncertainties.

This was a prevalent theme at the Electronics Show Mexico, a convention recently held in Mexico City. The event brought together thousands of attendees and about 300 exhibitors in the consumer tech space, all looking for ways LATAM companies can enhance international relationships. I had the opportunity to speak with exhibitors, suppliers, and distributors at the event, and explore the innovative tech products coming out of LATAM and other countries seeking growth partnerships in the region.

Carlos Clur, CEO of Grupo Eletrolar, explained that the focus of the show was to showcase what Latin America has to offer, including finding new markets for local companies, inviting investment opportunities for manufacturing and distribution, and promoting collaboration among LATAM countries. Clur also mentioned that the massive tariffs imposed on Chinese imports by the U.S. may lead to increased investment in manufacturing in the region.

After exploring the showroom at the Centro Banamex convention center, I came across some standout products. One such product was the Reebok Watch EB, a smartwatch that houses and charges earbuds, offering a unique convergence of technology. Another interesting find was the GetD family of smart eyeglasses and sunglasses, which start at just $89 USD and offer a variety of features including a voice-activated assistant and Bluetooth connectivity.

For those who enjoy a cold drink without dilution, the Feter Shot Chiller was a standout product. This countertop device dispenses liquor at temperatures below freezing, enhancing the taste of spirits without watering them down. Additionally, Eyesun Technology showcased kid-friendly cameras, video cameras, and camera-printer hybrids designed for children of all ages.

Overall, the Electronics Show Mexico highlighted the innovative products coming out of LATAM and other regions, as companies seek to expand their international partnerships in response to U.S. tariff challenges. It’s clear that collaboration and innovation will play a crucial role in navigating the current trade landscape.
