Saquon Barkley, the star running back for the New York Giants, expressed his hope that his former teammate, Daniel Jones, can find success similar to what he has experienced with the Philadelphia Eagles. The Giants recently announced that they have agreed to release Jones after the quarterback requested to be let go following his benching for third-string quarterback Tommy DeVito.
President John Mara stated, “Daniel came to see me this morning and asked if we would release him. We mutually agreed that would be best for him and for the team. Daniel has been a great representative of our organization, first class in every way. His handling of this situation yesterday exemplifies just that. We are all disappointed in how things have worked out. We hold Daniel in high regard and have a great appreciation for him. We wish him nothing but the best in the future.”
Jones, who signed a four-year, $160 million contract in 2023, has struggled during his six seasons with the Giants, only managing to lead the team to one playoff win. With Jones on his way out, Barkley was asked for his thoughts on the decision. Barkley expressed his support for Jones, stating, “I’m not gonna speak too much on that, I’ve been in contact with him. Our friendship has stayed close throughout the whole process of me being here. It sucks to see how everything went down for him over there. I’ve got nothing but great things to say about him.”
After a souring relationship with the Giants, Barkley signed a three-year deal with the Eagles during the offseason, where he has excelled, surpassing 1,000 rushing yards and scoring 10 touchdowns this season. Barkley believes that Jones can find similar success elsewhere, stating, “It didn’t work for me over there, and I’m doing well over here. Hopefully, he can find the same kind of fresh start and success.”
As Jones looks to move on from the Giants, Barkley remains hopeful for his former teammate’s future in the NFL. It remains to be seen where Jones will end up next, but Barkley’s support and well wishes are sure to follow him wherever he goes.
