Scherzer, Springer, Kirk help Jays to early lead, wins Pirates

Max Scherzer pitched a gem, earning his 220th career victory as the Toronto Blue Jays secured a 7-3 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates on Tuesday night. Scherzer went six innings, allowing just one run on four hits while striking out four and walking three. The veteran right-hander has now thrown at least six innings in five consecutive starts, solidifying his place as a reliable starter for the Blue Jays.
The Blue Jays got off to a hot start, scoring five runs in the first two innings against Pirates starter Mitch Keller. George Springer led the charge with a two-run homer in the second inning, his 20th of the season. Alejandro Kirk and Nathan Lukes also contributed RBIs in the early onslaught.
Kirk wasn’t done yet, adding a two-run homer of his own in the seventh inning off Colin Holderman. The young catcher finished the game with three hits and three RBIs, showcasing his offensive prowess.
Meanwhile, Keller struggled on the mound, giving up five runs in just 3 1/3 innings. The Pirates’ offense couldn’t muster much against Scherzer and the Blue Jays bullpen, leading to their eighth loss in the last 10 games.
One key stat to note is that the Blue Jays have been dominant in Interleague play, boasting a 25-13 record, the best in the league.
In a crucial moment of the game, the Pirates had a chance to capitalize with the bases loaded in the second inning against Scherzer, but could only manage one run on a groundout by Isiah Kiner-Falefa.
Looking ahead, the rubber match of the three-game series is set for Wednesday, with Chris Bassitt taking the mound for the Blue Jays and Johan Oviedo expected to start for the Pirates.
Overall, it was a strong performance by the Blue Jays, who continue to stay in the playoff race with each win. With key players like Scherzer and Kirk stepping up, the team looks poised for a deep postseason run.
