Schools in N.S. closed, dismissing early ahead of messy weather

The mainland of Nova Scotia is experiencing disruptions in school schedules due to an impending winter storm. The forecast predicts a mix of snow, freezing rain, and rain, prompting some schools to close or dismiss students early to ensure their safety.

According to CBC meteorologist Tina Simpkin, a strong area of low pressure is moving through the Maritimes and is expected to intensify. The day started with snowfall, which is anticipated to transition into ice pellets and freezing rain by early afternoon. As a result, freezing rain warnings have been issued for western and central parts of the province.

Several schools across Nova Scotia are affected by the inclement weather conditions. Halifax Regional Centre for Education schools will be dismissing students two hours early, while Tri-County Regional Centre for Education schools have closed for the day. South Shore Regional Centre for Education schools will be dismissing students three hours early, and Annapolis Valley Regional Centre for Education schools have also closed. Additionally, all Chignecto Central Regional Centre for Education schools in Colchester, Cumberland, and Pictou counties, as well as in the Municipality of East Hants, will be dismissing students two hours early.

Simpkin warns that there could be over four hours of freezing rain before it transitions to rain later in the evening. Between five and 10 centimeters of snow are expected to accumulate throughout the day, along with two to five millimeters of rain and freezing rain.

As the winter storm continues to impact Nova Scotia, residents are advised to stay updated on weather alerts and road conditions to ensure their safety during this period of inclement weather.
