US Election 2024

Schumer mocked for Corona and guac clip warning Trump tariffs will hurt Super Bowl parties: ‘Not good at this’

Senate Minority Leader Charles Schumer faced criticism for his public response to President Donald Trump’s threats of a potential trade war with Mexico and Canada. Just before Trump negotiated a temporary pause on major tariffs set to take effect, Schumer tried to highlight the potential negative impacts of these tariffs on everyday Americans. In a somewhat unconventional move, Schumer sought to make the issue relatable by referencing popular Super Bowl party foods.

“It’s going to affect beer, OK,” Schumer said, holding up a can of Corona Extra. “Most of it, Corona here, comes from Mexico. It’s going to affect your guac – because what is guacamole made of? Avocados. If you have pizza, it’s going to affect the cost of cheese.”

Schumer emphasized that tariffs would lead to higher prices for New Yorkers and warned that everything promised during the election would be in jeopardy if the tariffs were implemented. However, his attempt to connect with the public drew criticism from various quarters.

Comedian Jon Stewart criticized Schumer for his response, stating that Democrats should stop relying on Schumer to respond to Trump’s actions. Others pointed out that Schumer’s claim that “most beer” comes from Mexico was inaccurate, as the U.S. produces a significant amount of its beer domestically.

Critics, including conservative pundit Matt Walsh, called out Schumer for his comments on beer and avocados, highlighting the thriving beer industry in Schumer’s home state of New York. Some critics even suggested that Schumer misrepresented the availability of avocados in the U.S., pointing out that they are grown in states like California, Florida, and Hawaii.

Despite the backlash, Schumer did not respond to the criticism. The incident highlighted the ongoing divide between Democrats and Republicans on trade policy and their approach to addressing economic issues. Schumer’s attempt to connect with voters through relatable examples ultimately backfired, drawing criticism from both sides of the political spectrum.
