Sean (Diddy) Combs’s sex trafficking trial is nearing its end. Here’s how it played out
The trial of hip hop mogul Sean (Diddy) Combs has brought to light shocking allegations of sexual violence and exploitation. Prosecutors have accused Combs of using his power and influence to coerce women, including his ex-girlfriend Cassie, into abusive sexual encounters. The trial, which has lasted over six weeks, has seen 34 witnesses testify to the alleged crimes.
According to prosecutors, Combs organized drug-fuelled events known as “freak-offs,” where he would fly male sex workers to various cities and set up hotel rooms for these encounters. Women were allegedly forced to participate in these events, with the threat of violence if they refused. Combs has been charged with sex trafficking and racketeering conspiracy, and if convicted, he could face a lengthy prison sentence.
Throughout the trial, key witnesses have recounted harrowing experiences at the hands of Combs. Cassie, the R&B singer, testified that she was subjected to degrading and painful sex acts and was forced to participate in these events for a decade. Another witness, known as Jane, tearfully described how she engaged in sexual performances with male sex workers to please Combs, even though she did not want to.
Rapper Kid Cudi also took the stand, alleging that Combs broke into his home and set fire to his car after finding out he was dating Cassie. Another witness, Cassie’s friend Bryana Bongolan, testified that Combs held her over a balcony, threatening her with violence. The court also heard how Combs paid a hotel security officer to obtain surveillance footage of him violently assaulting Cassie in a hotel hallway.
Despite the overwhelming evidence presented by the prosecution, Combs’s defense team chose not to call any witnesses, and Combs himself did not testify. The judge will now consider whether to dismiss the charges or proceed to closing arguments. The trial has shed light on the dark underbelly of the music industry and the abuse of power that can occur within it. If convicted, Combs could face a significant prison sentence, marking a significant fall from grace for the once-prominent music mogul.
