Search for West Hants youth who went missing in Nova Scotia flooding continues

BROOKLYN, N.S. — Search efforts for a youth who went missing during flooding caused by torrential rains over the weekend are still ongoing.

The youth was lost along with a 52-year-old Windsor man and two other children when the vehicles they were travelling in were swept away in floodwaters in separate incidents in the Brooklyn area.

On July 24, the remains of a 52-year-old man and one of the children were located. The next day, the remains of the second child were also found.

In a release, RCMP said searchers have been using industrial and high-flow pumping equipment to drain the area. The primary search area is now fully cleared of water, and the secondary zone is nearly drained.

The search in the primary area in Brooklyn finished Thursday evening. The focus has since moved to the secondary area, immediately next to the initial search zone.

A further tertiary area has been outlined, stretching along the shore from Halls Harbour to Brooklyn and Maitland to Brooklyn. This zone encompasses the edges of the river systems that drain into the Minas Basin and is being searched mostly by air.

Over 60 to 70 people, including first responders and volunteers, are engaged in the search each day.

Police said efforts will continue throughout the weekend.
