Search underway for missing snowmobiler in Cape Breton Highlands

The search for a missing snowmobiler in the Cape Breton Highlands continues, but challenging weather conditions are hindering rescue efforts. Paul Service, a spokesperson for the RCMP, reported that the search operation commenced early on Saturday near Oregon in Victoria County.
Ground search and rescue services, along with the Joint Rescue Coordination Centre, are assisting the police in their search efforts. However, high winds and blowing snow are making it difficult for teams to navigate the area. A helicopter is on standby, awaiting improved weather conditions before entering the search zone.
In light of the challenging conditions, the RCMP is urging the public to avoid the area to allow rescue teams the space they need to conduct their operations safely. The Ingonish Volunteer Fire Department reiterated this message on Facebook, stating that they are stationed in nearby Wreck Cove to prevent unauthorized access to the park by snowmobilers.
“We ask that everyone stay home and let the first responders do their work. The more people in the area, the more potential danger and patients we have to search for,” the fire department wrote on social media.
Updates on the search operation will be provided by the RCMP as soon as they become available. In the meantime, the focus remains on locating the missing snowmobiler and ensuring the safety of all involved in the rescue efforts.
