Self-deport or end up in ‘Alligator Alcatraz,’ Noem warns migrants during Trump visit

President Donald Trump made a visit on Tuesday to the grand opening of a new immigration detention camp located in the heart of Florida’s Everglades. The facility, known as “Alligator Alcatraz,” is set to be the largest migrant detention center in the United States. Surrounded by treacherous swampland and alligators, the high-security facility is designed to house the “worst of the worst” illegal migrants.

During his visit, Trump praised the facility as “beautiful and secure,” emphasizing the importance of prioritizing the deportation of dangerous individuals. The detention center, with a capacity of 3,000 beds, was constructed as part of the Trump administration’s efforts to address the influx of migrants into the country during the Biden administration.

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, alongside Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, outlined the operation of the facility. DeSantis highlighted the use of Florida National Guard members as immigration judges to expedite the legal process for migrants. He emphasized the need for efficient operations to ensure the swift removal of illegal immigrants.

Noem echoed DeSantis’s sentiments, emphasizing the collaboration between Florida and DHS as a potential model for other states. She issued a warning to illegal migrants, urging them to self-deport to avoid detention at the high-security facility. Noem emphasized the consequences of being detained at the facility, stating that individuals would not have the opportunity to return to America.

The construction of the detention center has faced opposition from environmentalists and Democrats. Protesters lined up along Highway 41, which runs through the Everglades, to demonstrate against the facility’s construction. Environmentalist groups have also filed a lawsuit against various federal and state agencies, citing concerns about the impact of the detention center on the Everglades ecosystem.
