US Election 2024

Sen. Josh Hawley ‘delighted’ to back Sen. John Cornyn for Senate Majority Leader

Republican senators are gearing up to choose a new Senate GOP leader next week, with Senator Josh Hawley of Missouri throwing his support behind Senator John Cornyn of Texas for the position. The selection will take place via secret ballot on Wednesday, November 13.

Hawley praised Cornyn’s efforts in helping secure the majority for the Republicans, citing his dedication to raising millions of dollars for competitive Senate races, including supporting Hawley’s own campaign. He also highlighted Cornyn’s advocacy for the RECA compromise, which aims to provide fair compensation to Americans affected by government negligence.

In addition to Cornyn, Senators Rick Scott of Florida and John Thune of South Dakota are also in the running for the Senate GOP leader role. Thune currently serves as the Senate Republican Whip, a position once held by Cornyn, while Scott has previous experience as the chair of the National Republican Senatorial Committee.

The upcoming leadership change comes after Senator Mitch McConnell of Kentucky, who has led the Senate GOP since 2007, announced that he would not seek another term as the Republican leader. The Republicans regained control of the Senate in the 2024 election.

During a recent interview on Fox Business’ “Kudlow,” Scott expressed his desire for President Donald Trump’s endorsement for the leadership position. On the other hand, Thune stated on CNBC’s “Squawk Box” that he would prefer Trump to stay out of the leadership race.

As the Senate GOP gears up for this crucial decision, the support from key senators like Hawley could play a significant role in determining the next leader. Stay tuned for updates on the outcome of the secret ballot vote on November 13.
