Senate confirms Doug Collins to lead the Department of Veterans Affairs

The Senate has officially confirmed former Rep. Doug Collins to lead the Department of Veterans Affairs, marking a significant bipartisan victory for the Trump administration. Collins, who served as an Air Force Reserve chaplain and in Congress from 2013 to 2021, received a wide bipartisan vote of 77 to 23, with only Senator Mazie Hirono voting against him. This appointment comes at a critical time for the VA, which has been plagued by budget shortfalls, executive payouts, and complaints from veterans about long wait times for care.

With over 400,000 employees and 1,300 health facilities under his purview, Collins faces a daunting task in leading the sprawling organization. However, he has expressed a deep commitment to improving the care and services provided to veterans. During his confirmation hearing, Collins emphasized the importance of not balancing budgets on the backs of veterans, promising to prioritize their needs above all else.

One of the key issues raised during the confirmation process was the potential for privatization of the VA. Collins aligned himself with President Trump’s stance on veterans’ choice for healthcare, supporting the Mission Act which allows veterans to choose between VA facilities and private care in their communities. He assured lawmakers that he believed in maintaining a strong VA while also incorporating community care options.

Democrats repeatedly pressed Collins on his stance on privatization, with Senator Thom Tillis even jokingly asking him to “pinky swear” not to privatize the VA. In a lighthearted moment, Collins held up his pinky to make the promise, assuring lawmakers that he was committed to preserving the integrity of the VA.

As Collins steps into his new role, he faces a myriad of challenges and responsibilities. However, his bipartisan confirmation and dedication to veterans’ care signal a promising start to his tenure as head of the Department of Veterans Affairs. With his background in Congress and his military service, Collins brings a unique perspective and a strong commitment to improving the lives of those who have served our country.
