Senate DOGE leader Ernst faces challenge from Iowa Democrat Nathan Sage

Democratic challenger Nathan Sage has officially thrown his hat into the ring to challenge Sen. Joni Ernst, R-Iowa, in the 2026 election. A Marine and Army veteran, Sage is positioning himself as a champion for the working class, vowing to fight for a Democratic Party that resonates with people like him.
In his campaign announcement video, Sage shared his personal story of growing up in a trailer park in Mason City, Iowa, as the son of a factory worker and daycare teacher. He emphasized his working-class roots and military service, highlighting his experiences and values that drive his desire to serve the people of Iowa.
Sage wasted no time in taking aim at Sen. Ernst, labeling her as “scandal-ridden” and “corporate-funded.” He criticized the influence of big money in politics and pledged to prioritize the needs of everyday Americans over the interests of the wealthy elite. Sage also called out tech billionaire Elon Musk, who has been a prominent figure in Republican circles, as a symbol of the out-of-touch ruling class.
The Democratic challenger’s platform focuses on issues such as economic inequality, healthcare access, and support for working families. He shared his personal motivation for running, citing his wife’s miscarriage and the challenges faced by working-class families in Iowa.
While Sen. Ernst is seeking her third term in the Senate, Sage believes that she has lost touch with the working-class voters of Iowa and is determined to offer a different vision for the state. Despite the Cook Political Report categorizing Ernst’s seat as “solid Republican,” Sage is confident in his ability to connect with voters and make a compelling case for change.
As the race heats up, Sage is positioning himself as a voice for the underrepresented and overlooked in Iowa, particularly in manufacturing counties like Marion County where he hails from. He is committed to standing up for the working class and ensuring that their voices are heard in Washington.
While Iowa has historically leaned Republican in recent elections, Sage is hoping to tap into the dissatisfaction and disillusionment felt by many working-class voters and offer a new direction for the state. With his background as a military veteran, chamber of commerce executive, and advocate for the working class, Sage presents a unique and compelling alternative to Sen. Ernst in the upcoming election.
