Senator-elect Jim Justice’s famous pooch, Babydog, reportedly banned from Senate floor

Senator-elect Jim Justice of West Virginia and his beloved pooch, Babydog, have hit a roadblock as Babydog has been banned from the Senate floor. According to Axios, dogs are not permitted on the Senate floor unless they are certified service animals, and even then, they must undergo additional screening for potential allergies.
The decision to ban Babydog was reportedly conveyed to Justice during an orientation session for Senators-elect at the Capitol Rotunda. While dogs are generally allowed on the Capitol premises, including in elected officials’ offices, the ban specifically applies to the Senate floor where legislative voting takes place.
Babydog gained national attention during the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee when she joined her father, then-Governor Jim Justice, on stage in a small chair. Given to Justice as a Christmas gift in 2019 by his children, Babydog has become a well-known figure in West Virginia politics, accompanying the Governor on his travels across the state.
Despite her popularity among West Virginians, it remains uncertain if any resolutions will be passed to allow exceptions for Babydog or other Senate dogs to be present on the Senate floor. Representatives for Senator-elect Jim Justice have not responded to requests for comments on the matter.
In light of these developments, fans of Babydog and supporters of Justice will have to wait and see if any changes are made to the Senate’s policy regarding pets on the floor. Babydog’s charm and presence have undoubtedly left a mark on West Virginia politics, and her absence from the Senate floor is sure to be felt by many.
