Service dog helps boy with rare genetic disorder achieve ‘unbelievable’ progress

A mother’s love knows no bounds, especially when it comes to advocating for her child’s health and well-being. Susan Bresnahan, a nurse with 20 years of experience, found herself in a challenging situation when her son, Patrick, was diagnosed with a rare genetic disorder known as Timothy syndrome at just over 2 years old.

Timothy syndrome is a neurodevelopmental disorder caused by a mutation of the CACNA1C gene, affecting fewer than 100 people worldwide. The disorder can have life-threatening implications, impacting the heart, cognitive abilities, nervous system, immune system, and physical appearance of those affected. Early symptoms can include irregular heart function, seizures, communication difficulties, and developmental delays.

For Susan, the diagnosis brought relief after years of uncertainty. As a healthcare professional, she recognized the importance of early intervention and sought out additional ways to support Patrick beyond traditional therapies. This led her to explore the option of a service dog to assist her son in his daily activities and provide him with companionship and support.

After connecting with ECAD (Educated Canines Assisting with Disabilities), the Bresnahan family embarked on a fundraising journey to cover the costs of acquiring a service dog. Through the generosity of friends, family, and community members, they were able to raise the necessary funds and welcome Yammy, a golden retriever, into their lives.

The impact of Yammy on Patrick’s development was nothing short of miraculous. Within weeks of having the service dog by his side, Patrick began to achieve new milestones and move with greater ease and confidence. Yammy’s presence not only provided physical assistance but also emotional support, boosting Patrick’s social abilities and self-esteem.

Today, at 4 years old, Patrick continues to thrive with Yammy by his side, despite the ongoing risks associated with his condition. Susan remains hopeful for advancements in treatments and therapies for Timothy syndrome and encourages other parents facing similar challenges to consider genetic testing for their children.

The bond between Patrick and Yammy serves as a testament to the power of love, determination, and the unwavering support of a community. As Susan reflects on their journey, she acknowledges the transformative impact of having a service dog and the profound difference it has made in her son’s life.
