Denis Shapovalov Leads Canadian Team for Davis Cup Qualifier
Denis Shapovalov is set to lead the Canadian team in their first-round Davis Cup qualifier against Hungary next month in Montreal. The 25-year-old tennis star, hailing from Richmond Hill, Ontario, is currently ranked 58th in the ATP Tour rankings. Tennis Canada has announced the five-man roster for the upcoming tie, which also includes Gabriel Diallo from Montreal, Alexis Galarneau from Laval, Quebec, Liam Draxl from Newmarket, Ontario, and Vasek Pospisil from Vernon, British Columbia.
The winner of the February 1-2 tie will advance to the second round of qualifiers scheduled for September. Canada, currently ranked third, claimed the Davis Cup title in 2022 but has faced quarterfinal exits in the last two years. On the other hand, Hungary, ranked 22nd, earned their spot in the first-round tie by defeating Egypt in World Group 1 play.
In a recent match at the Adelaide International in Australia, Shapovalov showcased his prowess on the court by securing a swift victory over No. 9 seed Zhizhen Zhang of China. The Canadian player delivered a dominant performance, striking nine aces and winning 31 of 32 points on his first serve. Shapovalov did not face a single break point during the 67-minute match, advancing to the second round with ease.
Joining Shapovalov in the winner’s circle at the Adelaide International were Australians Thanasi Kokkinakis and Christopher O’Connell. Kokkinakis secured a hard-fought victory over Japan’s Yoshihito Nishioka, while O’Connell emerged victorious against France’s Arthur Rinderknech. Additionally, Alejandro Davidovich Fokina of Spain eliminated his compatriot, Roberto Bautista Agut, in a straight-set win.
As the Davis Cup qualifier approaches, all eyes will be on Shapovalov and the Canadian team as they aim to secure a spot in the next round of qualifiers. With a talented roster and Shapovalov leading the charge, Canada is poised to make a strong statement in the upcoming tie against Hungary. Stay tuned for more updates on this exciting tennis showdown.
