Trump administration cuts federal workforce by 23,000 federal positions, OPM says

The Trump administration has made significant strides in reducing the federal government workforce, with plans for further cuts in the future. Data released by the U.S. Office of Personnel Management (OPM) shows that the number of federal workers has decreased from 2,313,216 in September 2024 to 2,289,472 as of March 31. This reduction of over 23,000 positions is part of the administration’s efforts to streamline government operations and eliminate unnecessary bureaucracy.
Acting OPM Director Charles Ezell emphasized the importance of a lean and efficient government focused on core priorities. He stated that these cuts are just the beginning of President Trump’s vision for a disciplined and accountable federal workforce. In February, Trump signed an executive order directing the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) to coordinate with federal agencies to implement substantial staffing cuts.
The data reflects the impact of these efforts, with agencies reducing their monthly hires from 23,000 to 7,385 once the freeze was fully implemented. OPM highlighted that these cuts have saved taxpayers billions of dollars. Additional reductions are expected in October 2025, as more workers leave through the Deferred Resignation Program aimed at further trimming the workforce.
Despite these measures, challenges remain as thousands of employees facing termination are still on the government payroll due to legal disputes. Trump’s attempts to shrink the federal workforce have faced opposition from Democrats and the courts, with critics arguing that critical jobs are being eliminated. The administration has faced resistance from federal judges, prompting Trump to express concern about the judiciary overstepping its bounds.
In response to these challenges, OPM introduced a new rule to streamline the process of terminating federal employees for serious misconduct. This rule aims to cut through the bureaucratic red tape that hinders the removal of underperforming or problematic employees. By simplifying the termination process, agencies can more effectively address issues within the workforce.
Overall, the Trump administration’s efforts to reduce the federal government workforce are part of a broader push to enhance efficiency and accountability. While facing opposition and legal hurdles, the administration remains committed to its goal of creating a more streamlined and effective government. The ongoing changes reflect a commitment to optimizing operations and delivering value to the American people.
