Singh says NDP faces ‘massive challenges’ as voters look to Liberals, Conservatives to battle Trump

The leader of the New Democratic Party (NDP), Jagmeet Singh, has acknowledged the significant challenges facing his party as they struggle with single-digit polling numbers and voters seek a strong contender to take on U.S. President Donald Trump. Singh admitted the hurdles during an event in Toronto, emphasizing that despite the obstacles, he remains committed to fighting for the Canadian people.

Singh highlighted the constant questioning of the NDP’s electoral relevance, especially in a country that has never had an NDP prime minister. He affirmed his determination to continue the battle over the next five weeks, stating that he will never give up on advocating for those in need. Singh criticized Conservative Leader Pierre Poiliever and Liberal Leader Mark Carney for prioritizing the interests of billionaires and corporations, while he remains dedicated to championing ordinary Canadians.

Former NDP leader Tom Mulcair recently wrote a column for CTV, suggesting that the upcoming election is primarily a race between the ruling Liberals and the opposition Conservatives, with little room for other contenders. Mulcair emphasized the importance of selecting a leader capable of effectively confronting Trump’s policies.

The latest data from the CBC Poll Tracker reveals a significant drop in support for the NDP, with the party now polling at less than 10% while the Liberals and Conservatives lead with 40% and 37% support respectively. Polling expert Éric Grenier attributes the NDP’s decline to the rise of the Liberal numbers following Justin Trudeau’s resignation and Carney’s appointment as the new Liberal leader.

The current political landscape is marked by uncertainty due to Trump’s trade actions and threats against Canada, impacting key NDP campaign issues like affordability and housing. Grenier noted that the NDP’s polling numbers have not been this low since the 1990s, suggesting that the party may be heading towards one of its worst election results in over 30 years.
