Singh suggests NDP could help Liberals pass Trump tariff relief

NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh has made it clear that he is willing to work with the Liberal government to pass relief measures for workers in the face of potential tariffs from U.S. President Donald Trump. While Singh has previously stated his intention to bring down the government at the earliest opportunity, he is now open to exploring alternative options that do not result in an immediate defeat for the Liberals.

In response to the looming threat of tariffs, Singh has expressed a willingness to listen to what the government is proposing in terms of providing support for workers affected by the potential trade war. He emphasized the need for all opposition leaders to come together and discuss a plan to address the economic fallout that could result from Trump’s proposed tariffs.

On the other hand, Bloc Québécois Leader Yves-François Blanchet has ruled out supporting the Liberals, stating that giving the government more time could lead to delays in passing emergency legislation. Blanchet suggested that the Liberals should simply start the election sooner if they are serious about helping people.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has assured Canadians that the government will assist workers and businesses impacted by the potential tariffs. Trump has threatened to impose 25 per cent tariffs on Canadian goods as of February 1, a move that could have significant economic consequences for both countries.

Despite his previous stance on bringing down the government, Singh highlighted the need for collaboration in addressing the current crisis. He referenced the swift action taken during the pandemic when all parties worked together to pass relief measures, emphasizing the importance of supporting workers during times of national crisis.

While Parliament is prorogued, the Liberal government continues to work on crafting a response to Trump’s tariff threats. Natural Resources Minister Jonathan Wilkinson warned Canadians to brace for a turbulent period ahead, as Ottawa prepares to retaliate with tariffs on U.S. goods if necessary.

Wilkinson outlined the potential negative impacts of Trump’s proposed tariffs on both Canada and the United States, emphasizing the interconnected nature of the two countries’ economies. He debunked Trump’s claim that the U.S. does not need Canada or its natural resources, pointing out the significant consequences that could result from imposing tariffs on Canadian goods.

As the situation unfolds, it is clear that collaboration and decisive action will be crucial in navigating the challenges posed by the potential tariffs. Singh’s willingness to work with the government signals a recognition of the importance of putting aside political differences to prioritize the well-being of Canadian workers and businesses.
