Size of slim Republican House majority hangs on 5 uncalled races
Republicans currently hold a slim majority in the House of Representatives, with the final outcome of the narrow margin depending on the results of five undecided races. As of Monday morning, the balance of power stands at 218 seats for Republicans and 212 for Democrats.
The five House races that are still too close to call are located in Alaska, California, Iowa, and Ohio. Let’s take a closer look at each of these races.
**Alaska: At-large district**
In Alaska’s at-large congressional district, Democratic incumbent Rep. Mary Sattler Peltola is facing a tough challenge from Republican entrepreneur Nick Begich. With 98% of the votes counted, Begich currently holds a lead of nearly 3 points, with 48.7% of the vote compared to Peltola’s 46.1%.
**California: 13th Congressional District**
Republican Rep. John Duarte is leading former Democratic state assembly member Adam Gray in California’s 13th Congressional District. Although 86% of the votes have been counted, Duarte maintains a narrow lead of 50.6% to 49.4%.
In the 45th Congressional District of California, Democratic challenger Derek Tran has edged ahead of Republican incumbent Rep. Michelle Steel by a mere 36 votes. The race remains too close to call as both candidates await the final results.
**Iowa: 1st Congressional District**
In Iowa’s 1st Congressional District, Republican incumbent Rep. Mariannet Miller-Meeks holds a slim lead of less than 1% over challenger Christina Bohannan. With 99% of the votes tallied, Miller-Meeks is ahead by just under 1,000 votes. Bohannan has requested a recount, and the race has not been officially called.
**Ohio: 9th Congressional District**
Democratic incumbent Marcy Kaptur is leading her Republican challenger, Derek Merrin, by less than 1 point in Ohio’s 9th Congressional District. With 99% of the votes counted, Kaptur maintains a lead of just over 1,000 votes. Ohio law triggers an automatic recount for races with a margin of 0.5% or less.
The outcome of these undecided races will have a significant impact on the balance of power in the House of Representatives. As we await the final results, both parties are closely monitoring the remaining votes to determine the future composition of the House.
