Snow and cold on the way for Nova Scotia, making for messy commutes

As we approach the end of January in Nova Scotia, the weather is starting to become more active after a period of cold and quiet conditions.

A cold front is currently moving through the province on Tuesday afternoon and evening, bringing light snowfall of two to five centimetres for most areas. However, northern Nova Scotia, including the Annapolis Valley, Colchester, and Cumberland counties, could see totals of five to 10 centimetres. This will likely result in slick, slushy, and snowy roads for the Tuesday afternoon commute, with temperatures dropping overnight and turning icy by Wednesday morning.

The morning commute on Wednesday may be icy in spots, especially on untreated roads. The next system is expected to move in throughout the day on Wednesday, with snow starting in the morning for western areas and spreading to central and eastern regions in the afternoon. Most of the province can expect snow on the roads during the Wednesday afternoon and evening commutes.

The system is forecasted to bring widespread snowfall totals of two to five centimetres on Wednesday afternoon, followed by another five to 10 centimetres in the evening and overnight. Lingering flurries and additional snowfall are possible into Thursday morning, particularly in eastern areas.

Thursday will be very cold across Nova Scotia, with temperatures ranging from -8 to -12 degrees Celsius and northwest winds gusting near 50 km/h, resulting in wind chills of -15 to -25 degrees Celsius. The day will see snow tapering off to flurries in the morning.

The active weather pattern is set to continue with another system expected to track through on Friday, potentially bringing more snow during the afternoon commute. Stay tuned for updates and be prepared for changing road conditions as winter weather continues to impact the region.
