Snowy, slushy Thursday morning commute in store for Nova Scotia

Spring in the Maritimes is a fickle time of year, with Mother Nature taking us on a rollercoaster ride of weather. And it seems like we’re in for a classic two steps forward, one step back scenario in Nova Scotia.

Just when we thought we were in the clear from winter weather, a shot of snow is on the way for Wednesday night and into Thursday morning. The snow will be wet and slushy, but it will accumulate, especially across eastern areas of the mainland and Cape Breton, where a snowfall warning has been issued.

According to meteorologists, temperatures will be near or slightly above zero throughout the event, which means snowfall amounts will vary depending on elevation and proximity to the coastline. Eastern areas can expect 10 to 15 centimetres of snow, with pockets of up to 20 centimetres possible over inland and higher terrain areas. Central areas, including Halifax, can expect five to 10 centimetres, with amounts tapering off to a trace in the west.

Showers and flurries will kick off Wednesday evening and then transition to wet snow overnight. The snow is likely to mix with rain along parts of the Atlantic coastline. This snowy mix will continue into Thursday morning, making for a snowy and slushy commute for most of the province. Anyone planning to travel should give themselves extra time and space on the roads.

The good news is that snow doesn’t stick around for long at this time of year. By Thursday afternoon, temperatures will rise into the mid-single digits as flurries mix to a few showers and breaks of sun. Friday will see melting snow with highs in the mid-single digits and more sunshine.
