Former New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio recently announced his endorsement of democratic socialist Zohran Mamdani for mayor, emphasizing Mamdani’s dedication to affordability for working-class New Yorkers. De Blasio penned his endorsement in an opinion piece for the New York Daily News, praising Mamdani’s progressive mission, which includes freezing rent, providing free child care, and establishing city-run grocery stores.

Mamdani’s victory in the Democratic primary showcased widespread support for his platform among New Yorkers. However, Republican nominee Curtis Sliwa criticized de Blasio’s endorsement, warning that Mamdani could be “de Blasio 2.0, but far more dangerous.”

Despite skepticism surrounding Mamdani’s ambitious campaign promises, de Blasio defended his ability to deliver, drawing parallels to his own tenure as mayor. De Blasio highlighted his successful initiatives such as affordable housing, paid sick days, and a $15 minimum wage, reassuring voters that Mamdani’s vision is achievable with the right political will.

As President Donald Trump passed legislation that de Blasio described as detrimental to working people, he stressed the importance of having a strong advocate in City Hall. De Blasio urged voters to embrace Mamdani’s radical vision for New York City, building on his own impact and taking progressive policies even further.

While de Blasio’s endorsement was expected, other prominent Democratic leaders in New York, including Gov. Kathy Hochul, Rep. Hakeem Jeffries, and Sen. Chuck Schumer, have yet to endorse Mamdani. The race for mayor remains competitive as the candidates seek support from key figures in the party.

As the election draws near, the endorsement from de Blasio adds momentum to Mamdani’s campaign, solidifying his position as a progressive candidate committed to addressing the needs of working-class New Yorkers.
