Some evacuation -orders will be canceled in Annapolis County, say civil servants

Residents of Annapolis County will soon be able to return to their homes as evacuation orders for hundreds of addresses are set to be lifted on 3 September. The natural fire that prompted the evacuations has been brought under control, allowing people to go back to their properties.
Approximately 360 properties near Round Trout Lake, Zwickers Lake, East Lake, and along Highway 10 in the New Albany area were evacuated over a week ago. However, around 131 addresses in West-Dalhousie are still within the evacuation zone and residents in that area are not yet permitted to return.
The re-entry process will be carried out in stages starting on Wednesday morning. Residents must present proof of identification before being allowed back into the area. Those evacuated from secondary properties must show documentation with their address on it.
Re-entry schedule for residents:
- 9:00 am – All roads around Trout Lake
- 11:00 am – Roads around Zwickers Lake and East Lake
- 1:00 pm – Highway 10; West Dalhousie Road from Highway 10 to Che-Boag-a-Herh Road; and Che-Boag-a-cheh Road (Connell Lake)
- 4:00 pm – Highway 10 opens to the general public
Despite the lifting of evacuation orders, officials urge caution and prioritize safety for returning residents. The Long Lake Wildfire, which is still active, remains the largest fire in the province this season. Efforts are ongoing to contain the fire, with teams focusing on the most active areas.
While some rain has helped improve conditions, more precipitation is needed to fully control the fire. Firefighters have been working tirelessly to protect homes and prevent further damage as the fire continues to spread. The majority of houses in the area have been saved thanks to their efforts.
Scott Tingley, manager of forest protection with DNR, emphasized the challenges posed by the fire but assured that crews are working diligently to secure the affected areas. The situation is being closely monitored, and efforts are being made to bring the fire under control as soon as possible.
