‘Sopranos’ Star Jerry Adler, Broadway Backstage Vet Turned Late-In-Life Actor, Dies At 96

Jerry Adler, a seasoned veteran of Broadway productions who later found success as an actor in his 60s, passed away at the age of 96 in New York. His career spanned decades, with a wealth of experience both behind-the-scenes and in front of the camera.

Adler’s acting credits include iconic roles in “The Sopranos” as Tony Soprano’s adviser Hesh Rabkin and in “The Good Wife” as law partner Howard Lyman. However, before his foray into acting, Adler had a remarkable career in Broadway, with 53 productions to his name as a stage manager, producer, and director.

Coming from a family deeply rooted in Jewish and Yiddish theater, Adler’s father and cousin were prominent figures in the industry. He once humorously remarked, “I’m a creature of nepotism,” highlighting his familial connections to the world of entertainment.

After leaving Broadway during a slump in the 1980s, Adler transitioned to television, working on shows like “Santa Barbara.” It was a chance encounter with a casting director that reignited his passion for acting, leading to a successful career in film and television.

His diverse body of work included roles in Woody Allen’s “Manhattan Murder Mystery” and appearances on popular TV shows like “Rescue Me” and “Mad About You.” Adler even returned to Broadway in Elaine May’s “Taller Than a Dwarf” and later in Larry David’s “Fish in the Dark.”

In a recent interview, Adler expressed his love for acting, stating, “I do it because I really enjoy it. I think retirement is a road to nowhere.” His memoir, “Too Funny for Words: Backstage Tales from Broadway, Television and the Movies,” offered insights into his illustrious career.
