South Dakota on alert during manhunt for suspect who killed Minnesota lawmaker

Authorities in South Dakota are on high alert as they join the search for the suspect responsible for the shooting and killing of one Minnesota lawmaker and her husband, as well as the injuring of another lawmaker and his wife early Saturday. The suspect, identified as 57-year-old Vance Luther Boelter, is believed to still be in the Midwest, with a focus on Minnesota. However, residents in South Dakota have been asked to remain vigilant and report any sightings of Boelter.

Senator Amy Klobuchar, D-Minn., provided an update on the situation during an interview on NBC’s “Meet the Press.” She confirmed that the suspect is still at large and urged the public to exercise caution. Boelter is accused of fatally shooting former Minnesota House Speaker Melissa Hortman and her husband, Mark, in their Brooklyn Park home. State Senator John Hoffman and his wife, Yvette, were also shot and wounded in their Champlin residence, just nine miles away.

The FBI has escalated their efforts in tracking down Boelter, offering a reward of up to $50,000 for information leading to his arrest and conviction. Despite authorities locating Boelter’s car near Highway 25 and 301 Avenue in Faxon Township, Sibley County, the suspect remains on the run. Residents have been advised to keep their doors locked and report any suspicious activity.

Klobuchar shared updates on the condition of the Hoffmans, stating that they are currently stable but have suffered multiple gunshot wounds. She emphasized the importance of not approaching Boelter, as he should be considered dangerous. The senator also warned that Boelter’s recent writings and manifesto indicate a volatile nature, making him a serious threat to the community.

Law enforcement officials have confirmed that the lawmakers were targeted in the attacks. The FBI released images of Boelter impersonating a police officer and wearing a mask outside one of the lawmaker’s homes. Another photo shows him wearing a tan cowboy hat at a Minneapolis business shortly after the shootings.

As the manhunt for Boelter continues, authorities are urging the public to stay vigilant and report any sightings or information that could lead to his capture. The safety of the community remains a top priority as law enforcement works tirelessly to bring the suspect to justice.
