South Shore education centre reverses decision that banned flying diverse flags

The South Shore Regional Centre for Education has made a significant reversal in their decision regarding the display of flags outside South Shore schools. In a recent post on their website, executive director Angela Gladwin issued an apology for the initial directive that only Canada and Nova Scotia flags be flown, acknowledging the concerns raised by school communities.

Gladwin explained that the temporary changes were implemented to facilitate a better understanding of flag protocols while damaged flags were being replaced. However, after hearing the feedback from school communities, the centre has decided to immediately reinstate the flying of various diversity flags outside school buildings.

The decision to only allow Canada and Nova Scotia flags had upset many members of the Nova Scotia Teachers Union, as flags representing Mi’kmaw, African Nova Scotian, LGBTQ+ and other communities were ordered to be taken down. Education Minister Brendan Maguire also weighed in on the issue, stating that schools on the South Shore were expected to resume flying flags representing diverse communities.

Gladwin noted that diversity flags and banners have already begun to be moved back outdoors at some schools, and that the centre is actively reviewing the proper protocols for flying flags to ensure all schools have flags in good condition. She expressed her sincere apologies to those who were affected by the temporary relocation, emphasizing the importance of creating inclusive environments that acknowledge and respect diverse communities.

Moving forward, the South Shore Regional Centre for Education is committed to rebuilding relationships that may have been impacted by this decision. They are dedicated to ensuring that their schools and work sites continue to foster inclusive environments that celebrate the diversity of their communities.
