Southern CA customs officers intercept massive cigarette smuggling attempt

Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers in Southern California made a significant seizure of illegally imported cigarettes from two cruise ship passengers in April. The officers at the Los Angeles/Long Beach Seaport discovered a total of around 150,000 cigarettes, packed in 749 cartons spread across 10 pieces of luggage belonging to a couple arriving from Ensenada, Mexico.

The seized cigarettes, which included 326 cartons of Newport 100s and 210 cartons of Marlboro Golds, were estimated to be valued at approximately $59,920 based on a conservative selling price of $80 per unit. Jaime Ruiz, the CBP’s Strategic Media Engagement Branch Chief for most of the Western U.S., described this bust as one of the largest seen at the LA:Long Beach seaport complex.

The two women were found with the contraband cigarettes after presenting themselves for inspection upon disembarking at the Long Beach Cruise Ship Terminal. Despite providing receipts for the purchases, they were unable to produce permits required for transporting such a large quantity of tobacco products.

CBP Port Director Africa R. Bell highlighted the potential profitability of selling illegally imported cigarettes due to their low cost when purchased overseas and the avoidance of taxes upon importation. She emphasized that such schemes not only evade revenue owed to the United States but could also be harmful to American consumers.

Investigations into the incident may continue, with potential penalties for the women violating import laws. The immediate consequence for the individuals involved is the loss of nearly $60,000 due to the seizure and destruction of the cigarettes.

Cheryl M. Davies, CBP Director of Field Operations in Los Angeles, reiterated the high price that travelers who intentionally disregard U.S. importation laws and regulations often pay. The enforcement efforts of CBP officers at the nation’s largest seaport complex remain focused on upholding laws and protecting the American public.

This seizure serves as a reminder of the consequences of engaging in illegal importation activities. The individuals involved not only face potential penalties but also incurred a significant financial loss. CBP’s vigilance in combating illegal imports helps safeguard the nation’s interests and ensures compliance with importation regulations.
