Spider monkey seized during California methamphetamine bust

A recent drug bust in Northern California has led to the rescue of three exotic animals, one of which is now receiving treatment at the Oakland Zoo. The incident occurred when deputies from the Solano County Sheriff’s Office conducted a traffic stop in Vallejo, resulting in the arrest of 50-year-old Clifford Vincenty and the confiscation of half a pound of methamphetamine.

Following the arrest, a search warrant was executed at Vincenty’s residence, where law enforcement discovered another pound of meth, over $2,000 in cash, two live rattlesnakes, and a spider monkey. The exotic animals were removed from the premises by animal control, and the spider monkey, named Violeta and approximately 18 months old, was taken to the Oakland Zoo for care.

According to a statement from the zoo, Violeta was found to be in decent health and is currently being looked after by the veterinary hospital staff. They are providing her with a nutritious diet, formula, blankets, and toys to ensure her well-being and comfort. Despite the challenging circumstances, Violeta is said to be adapting well to her temporary home at the zoo.

The Oakland Zoo emphasized the dangers associated with the exotic pet trade, particularly the capture of infant spider monkeys. Colleen Kinzley, the vice president of animal care, conservation, and research at the zoo, highlighted the detrimental impact of separating baby monkeys from their families and the lifelong health issues that can arise from improper care and socialization.

Vincenty has been charged with possession of a controlled substance for sale and could face additional charges related to the possession of exotic animals. The investigation is ongoing, with the Solano County Sheriff’s Office yet to provide further details on the case.
