Canadian goalkeeper Crépeau’s focus is always to accumulate small wins and greatness will follow

In 2021, Maxime Crépeau found himself diving across his goal during a training session in snow-swept Edmonton. As a member of the men’s national soccer team, he was inching closer to securing the starting goalkeeper position with his relentless competitiveness and unwavering mentality.

Starting goalkeeping at the age of 10 outside Montreal, Crépeau quickly realized that his brain was perfectly suited for the position. He thrived on the one-versus-one challenges that came with being a goalkeeper, developing a mindset focused on winning each individual battle on the field.

However, Crépeau faced a major setback in the 2022 MLS Cup final when he suffered a shattered right leg while playing for LAFC. This injury cost him a spot on the national team for the first men’s World Cup for Canada in 36 years. Despite this setback, Crépeau made a remarkable comeback in 2023 and eventually found a new home with the Portland Timbers.

Throughout his career, Crépeau learned the importance of building strong relationships with his fellow goalkeepers, viewing them as partners rather than rivals. This approach, combined with his relentless work ethic, earned him the starting role at the Copa America under the new head coach, Jesse Marsch.

As Canada finished a surprising fourth in the tournament, Crépeau’s ferocious play and aggressive style caught the attention of fans and critics alike. However, he remains grounded, knowing that in soccer, success is fleeting, and one must constantly prove themselves to maintain their position.

Looking ahead, Crépeau remains focused on the present, locked in on the upcoming Nations League quarterfinal against Suriname. With his eyes set on future opportunities, including the prospect of starting in goal at a home World Cup in 2026, Crépeau trusts his subconscious to guide him towards his ultimate goal.
