Gregg Popovich Plans to Return to Coaching After Stroke
San Antonio Spurs coach Gregg Popovich has announced his intention to return to coaching after suffering a stroke in early November. This revelation comes in his first public comments since the incident.
Popovich, who holds the NBA’s record for career coaching wins, expressed his gratitude for the support he has received during his recovery. The stroke, which the Spurs described as mild, occurred just hours before the team’s game against Minnesota on November 2.
While there is no set timetable for his return to coaching, doctors are optimistic about Popovich’s full recovery. In a statement released through the Spurs, Popovich acknowledged the overwhelming support he and his family have received during this challenging time.
\”This has been an unexpected journey for my family and me,\” Popovich said. \”The outpouring of support has been truly heartwarming. We are thankful for the community, the Spurs organization, and our loved ones for their unwavering support.\”
At 75 years old, Popovich has led the Spurs to five championships and coached the United States to a gold medal in the 2021 Tokyo Olympics. This season marks his 29th year as the head coach of the Spurs.
The stroke occurred at the team’s arena, allowing Popovich to receive immediate treatment from rescue workers. He was swiftly transported to a nearby hospital for further care.
While the extent of the stroke’s lingering effects remains undisclosed, longtime Spurs assistant Mitch Johnson has been serving as the acting coach in Popovich’s absence. Johnson has been praised for his performance in leading the team during this challenging period.
Popovich humorously noted that his rehabilitation team is eager for his return to coaching, despite his apparent impatience as a patient.
\”No one is more eager for me to return than those overseeing my rehabilitation,\” Popovich said. \”They have quickly learned that I’m not the most cooperative patient.\”
With three NBA Coach of the Year awards under his belt, Popovich is one of only three coaches to achieve this feat, alongside Don Nelson and Pat Riley. He also joins a select group of coaches with at least five NBA championships, including legends like Phil Jackson, Red Auerbach, John Kundla, and Riley.
Having been a part of the Spurs organization for nearly 35 years, Popovich’s tenure as head coach has been marked by success and longevity. He took over as head coach in 1996 and has been at the helm ever since.
\”We eagerly await his return to the court,\” said Spurs general manager Brian Wright, reflecting the sentiment of the entire organization.
