Spurs’ Gregg Popovich not expected to return this season as he recovers from stroke: report

San Antonio Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich suffered a “mild stroke” in November and has not coached since. Reports suggest that he will not be returning to the bench for the remainder of the season. The 76-year-old missed six games at the start of the season before it was revealed that he had experienced a stroke. Prior to the announcement, he had coached the team’s first five games.
ESPN reported over the weekend that Popovich’s future with the team is uncertain as he continues his recovery. In a statement released in December, Popovich expressed gratitude for the overwhelming support he and his family have received during this challenging time. He acknowledged the Spurs organization, his community, and loved ones for their unwavering support.
Although Popovich had not ruled out a potential comeback, he humorously remarked, “No one is more excited to see me return to the bench than the talented individuals who have been leading my rehabilitation process. They’ve quickly learned that I’m less coachable.” The team remains optimistic about his full recovery, with assistant coach Mitch Johnson stepping up in Popovich’s absence.
In a recent turn of events, it was announced that player Victor Wembanyama would miss the rest of the season due to a blood clot in his shoulder. This news adds to the challenges facing the Spurs this season.
Popovich holds an impressive record in the NBA, boasting 1,401 victories and 170 postseason wins, along with five NBA titles. He is the career leader in coaching wins and has spent his entire 29-year coaching career with the San Antonio Spurs.
As the NBA community waits for updates on Popovich’s health and potential return, fans and colleagues continue to show their support for the legendary coach. Fox News reporters Ryan Gaydos and Paulina Dedaj contributed to this report.
