St. Francis Xavier community mourns Father Stan

St. Francis Xavier University is deeply saddened by the passing of Rev. Stanley MacDonald, affectionately known as Father Stan, who was a beloved figure on campus and a passionate supporter of varsity sports at the Antigonish, N.S., school.

Father Stan, who passed away at the age of 92, was a native of Glace Bay, N.S., and an alumnus of St. FX. He was actively involved in varsity rugby and hockey during his time at the university, graduating in 1954. After pursuing a career as a priest, Father Stan returned to St. FX in 2008 to serve as a clergy-in-residence.

One of Father Stan’s most memorable contributions to St. FX was his enthusiastic presence at varsity games for both the men’s and women’s teams. Bob Hale, assistant vice-president of administration and ancillary services at St. FX, recalled how Father Stan would lead the crowd in chanting “Go X Go” at games, creating an electrifying atmosphere in the arena.

Despite his busy schedule attending games, Father Stan always found time for everyone he encountered. Hale noted that Father Stan had a genuine interest in people’s stories, taking the time to learn about their backgrounds and experiences at St. FX. Even in his later years when he was unwell, Father Stan continued to show kindness and warmth to everyone he met.

In a heartfelt letter to the campus community, St. FX president and vice-chancellor Andrew W. Hakin paid tribute to Father Stan’s unwavering positivity and unwavering support for the university. Hakin described Father Stan as an unofficial mentor, spiritual guide, and ultimate StFX Super Fan, embodying the values of the Xaverian community.
