St. Francis Xavier grad reunited with X-ring after it turns up at Dartmouth thrift store

Thanks to a heartwarming Facebook post and the dedication of former students, Becky Savoie, a graduate of St. Francis Xavier University, has been reunited with her cherished X-ring after seven long years. The ring was unexpectedly discovered on January 2 at a Value Village location in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia.

Shanna Hopkins, the director of the university’s alumni association, was tagged in a Facebook post regarding the found ring. Without hesitation, she stepped in to assist in the search for the ring’s rightful owner. Hopkins shared that all X-rings hold sentimental value, but this particular ring stood out to her as it belonged to a classmate from the year 2001, the same year she graduated. She noted that while the university frequently receives inquiries about lost rings, most are never recovered.

Intrigued by the discovery, Hopkins sought more information from the store about the ring. The inscription appeared to read “Becky B.,” prompting her to scour the yearbook for a match. After coming up empty-handed, she reached out to a fellow graduate from the same year, who mentioned a Becky Carruthers, now Becky Savoie.

With the information in hand, Hopkins attempted to contact Savoie through the alumni association’s database, only to find outdated contact details. Turning to Facebook, she connected with Savoie, who resides in Dartmouth. Savoie expressed her disbelief at the miraculous find, as she had spent years searching for the ring without success and had resigned herself to replacing it.

Upon confirming Savoie as the rightful owner, a university representative in Dartmouth facilitated the ring’s return to her. Overwhelmed with emotion, Savoie reflected on the significance of the X-ring ceremony, a pivotal moment for every graduate marking the transition into the real world. She also clarified that the inscription on the ring actually read “Becky B.A.,” symbolizing her bachelor of arts degree.

Recalling the last time she saw her ring when her toddler had played with it, Savoie speculated that it had inadvertently ended up mixed with donated toys at Value Village. Despite the mysterious journey of her ring, Savoie expressed deep gratitude for the community’s efforts in reuniting her with this treasured keepsake, likening the experience to a belated Christmas miracle. The heartwarming reunion serves as a poignant reminder of the enduring connections forged during one’s university years.
