State Department launches investigation into Rubio AI imposter
The State Department is currently investigating an alarming incident involving an impostor who used artificial intelligence to pose as Secretary of State Marco Rubio. This mysterious individual, pretending to be one of President Donald Trump’s Cabinet members, reached out to various government officials, including foreign ministers, a U.S. governor, and a member of Congress, using AI-generated voice and text messages that closely mimicked Rubio’s distinctive voice and writing style.
According to a report by the Washington Post, a senior U.S. official and a State Department cable confirmed the impersonation attempt. State Department spokesperson Tammy Bruce stated that the department takes the matter seriously and is continuously working to enhance its cybersecurity measures to prevent such incidents in the future. However, for security reasons, specific details about the investigation are not being disclosed at this time.
When asked about Rubio’s reaction to the impersonation, Bruce declined to provide any specifics, stating that the Secretary is transparent and direct in his interactions. The use of AI to impersonate Rubio raises concerns about potential manipulation of government officials to gain access to sensitive information or accounts.
The impersonation scheme began in mid-June when the impostor created a Signal account under the display name Marco.Rubio@state.gov, which is not Rubio’s actual email address. The fake Rubio contacted at least five individuals outside the Department, leaving voicemails and sending text messages on the Signal platform. Fortunately, the attempt was unsuccessful and deemed not very sophisticated by a senior U.S. official.
