State Department says ‘ball is in Russia’s court’ to accept US-backed ceasefire deal

The State Department spokesperson, Tammy Bruce, announced on Monday that the United States has proposed a ceasefire deal to Russia in regards to the conflict with Ukraine. This proposal includes an immediate 30-day ceasefire and the guarantee of resuming U.S. military aid and intelligence to Ukraine. The deal was finalized during diplomatic talks in Saudi Arabia last week.
During the State Department briefing, Bruce stated that Ukraine has agreed to accept the U.S. proposal for a temporary ceasefire. She emphasized that the next steps are now in Russia’s hands. Secretary of State Marco Rubio traveled to the G7 summit in Canada, where international partners expressed their support for a swift and lasting resolution to the conflict.
President Donald Trump’s Special Envoy to the Middle East, Steve Witkoff, recently met with Russian President Vladimir Putin. Putin expressed support for the ceasefire in principle, stating that the idea is correct and that Russia supports it. National Security Advisor Michael Waltz also expressed cautious optimism that a ceasefire could be on the horizon.
Despite the progress towards a ceasefire, key disagreements still need to be resolved between Russia and Ukraine. These include issues related to Ukraine’s potential entrance into NATO, territorial disputes, security guarantees, and potential prisoner swaps. Negotiations will also address the control of land and power plants in Ukraine.
While the Trump administration remains optimistic about the proposed ceasefire deal, GOP Senator Mike Rounds from South Dakota has cautioned that only time will reveal whether Putin is genuine in his intentions or if he plans to deceive the international community.
As discussions continue between the parties involved, the focus remains on achieving a lasting peace and resolution to the conflict. The world watches closely as efforts are made to bring an end to the violence and instability in the region.
