Strangers raise more than $150k for a man’s life saving cancer treatment

A Seattle man, Matt Maclean, has been facing a challenging battle with stage 4 colorectal cancer. After being diagnosed in October 2020, Maclean underwent various treatments including radiation, chemotherapy, and surgeries to combat the disease. In September 2021, he was declared in remission, but his journey took a turn when a follow-up scan revealed tumors in his liver.

Despite undergoing liver resection surgery, Maclean faced setbacks when additional tumors were discovered. Doctors attempted localized chemotherapy, but the treatment was unsuccessful in shrinking the tumors. With limited options available, Maclean discovered Verthermia, a Texas-based company offering experimental hyperthermic extracorporeal applied tumor therapy (HEATT).

Although FDA-approved, Maclean’s insurance provider deemed the treatment experimental and refused coverage. With the cost exceeding $150,000, Maclean turned to his community for support. Through a fundraising campaign, friends, family, and even strangers rallied around him, raising the necessary funds for the life-saving treatment.

Overwhelmed by the outpouring of support, Maclean expressed gratitude for the generosity shown to him during this difficult time. With an appointment scheduled for treatment at Verthermia, he remains hopeful for a successful outcome. Despite the challenges he has faced, Maclean is determined to fight and overcome his battle with cancer, thanks to the love and support of his community and family.

As he prepares for his upcoming treatment on March 6, 2025, Maclean remains optimistic about his future. He credits the compassion and kindness of those around him for giving him the strength to continue his fight against cancer. The support and generosity he has received have not only provided financial assistance but also emotional strength and encouragement as he faces this daunting journey.
