Summer McIntosh makes ‘The Nutcracker’ cameo

Summer McIntosh Makes a Splash at The National Ballet of Canada’s “The Nutcracker”

Olympic gold medallist and swimmer, Summer McIntosh, recently graced the stage in Toronto as a guest performer in The National Ballet of Canada’s production of “The Nutcracker.” The 18-year-old athlete, alongside her sister Brooke, took on the role of Cannon Dolls, a non-dancing position typically reserved for Canadian celebrities in the first act of the performance.

Video footage from the event captures the McIntosh sisters standing beside a company dancer as he fires a confetti-filled cannon into the audience, adding a touch of excitement to the show. According to The National Ballet, the Cannon Dolls are required to portray one timid and one bold character, with McIntosh confidently embracing the latter role during her brief appearance.

Notable Canadian figures who have previously participated in The National Ballet’s rendition of “The Nutcracker” include Toronto Maple Leafs’ Auston Matthews and Mitch Marner, former Toronto Raptors star Kyle Lowry, and retired astronaut Chris Hadfield.

McIntosh’s cameo at the ballet marks a memorable end to a successful year for the young athlete. In 2024, she made history by clinching three gold medals at the Paris Olympics, becoming the first Canadian athlete to achieve such a feat in summer or winter games. Additionally, McIntosh secured a silver medal in the 400-metre freestyle event.

Her achievements continued as she was honored with the Northern Star Award as Canada’s athlete of the year and set a world record time in the 400 freestyle at the short-course world championships in Budapest, Hungary. McIntosh’s remarkable talent and versatility have undoubtedly solidified her status as a rising star in the world of sports.
