Susan Collins to oppose Trump FBI director pick Kash Patel

Moderate GOP Senator Susan Collins of Maine has made it clear that she will not support President Donald Trump’s nominee for the director of the FBI, Kash Patel. In a statement released just before a crucial procedural vote, Collins expressed her concerns about Patel’s nomination in light of recent personnel changes at the Department of Justice.
“The nomination of Kash Patel to serve as Director of the FBI comes to the Senate against the backdrop of recent personnel actions at the Department of Justice, including the resignations of several career federal prosecutors who felt they were being instructed to act in a manner inconsistent with their ethical obligations,” Collins stated.
Collins went on to highlight Patel’s political background as a reason for her lack of support. “While I strongly support efforts to ensure all federal employees perform their responsibilities ethically and in accordance with the law, Mr. Patel’s recent political profile undermines his ability to serve in the apolitical role of Director of the FBI,” she added.
Patel’s confirmation vote is set to take place on Thursday afternoon, where his fate as the potential FBI director will be decided. Senate Democrats have already issued warnings to GOP members, cautioning them that confirming Patel could have lasting consequences.

Johnson, who was previously a politics reporter at the Washington Examiner, emphasized the significance of Collins’ decision in the confirmation process.
