Suspect accused of burning woman to death on NYC subway is previously deported illegal immigrant

The recent arrest of a migrant from Guatemala in connection to the tragic death of a woman who was set on fire and burned to death on a subway train in Brooklyn, New York has shocked and horrified the nation. Sebastin Zapeta, 33, was previously deported by the Trump administration after being arrested by Border Patrol on June 1, 2018, for illegally crossing into Sonoita, Arizona. Just days later, on June 7, Zapeta was deported back to Guatemala. However, he re-entered the U.S. illegally at an unknown date and location.

Following his arrest in connection to the heinous crime, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement spokesperson Marie Ferguson stated that Enforcement and Removal Operations will lodge an immigration detainer with the NYPD once Zapeta is charged and details of his location are released. Despite his arrest, no charges have been filed against Zapeta yet, with the Kings County District Attorney’s office stating that they do not have a timeline for when charges will be brought against him.

Surveillance video of the incident shows the suspect calmly approaching the woman, who appeared to be sitting motionless, possibly asleep, on a stationary F train at the Coney Island-Stillwell Avenue subway station before setting her on fire. The New York Police Department has not released the victim’s identity in response to inquiries.

The horrific act was described by New York City Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch as “one of the most depraved crimes one person could possibly commit against another human being.” The suspect, after setting the woman on fire, sat on a nearby bench and watched as officers and a transit worker extinguished the flames. Tragically, the woman was pronounced dead at the scene.

The NYPD swiftly apprehended the suspect hours later while he was riding on the same subway line. He was found in possession of a lighter in his pocket. The DA’s office has vowed to bring the perpetrator to justice, stating that the gruesome act of violence will be met with the most serious consequences. They commended the NYPD for their quick work in apprehending the suspect and ensuring accountability in the case.

This senseless and brutal crime has shaken the community, and efforts are being made to ensure that every New Yorker feels safe on the subways. The NYPD, along with law enforcement agencies, are working diligently to bring justice to the victim and her family. The nation mourns the loss of a life in such a tragic and violent manner.

The investigation is ongoing, and updates will be provided as more information becomes available. Our thoughts and prayers are with the victim’s loved ones during this difficult time.
