Suspect arrested after arson attack on PA governor’s mansion

A shocking incident unfolded early Sunday morning when a man allegedly set fire to the Pennsylvania governor’s mansion while Gov. Josh Shapiro and his family were inside sleeping. The suspect, identified as 38-year-old Cody Balmer, will be facing charges of attempted murder, terrorism, aggravated arson, and aggravated assault against an enumerated person, according to authorities.

Pennsylvania State Police Lt. Col. George Bivens revealed that Balmer had hopped a fence before the incident occurred around 2:00 a.m. The suspect had also created “homemade incendiary devices” and actively evaded troopers who were on the scene to secure the residence. Balmer broke into the mansion and set the fires while police were searching for him, resulting in a quick and intense event.

The fire broke out as Shapiro and his family were celebrating the first night of the Jewish holiday of Passover. Shapiro, a potential presidential contender for the Democratic Party in 2028, expressed his dismay at the violence during a press conference, emphasizing the need for society to rise above such acts.

Shapiro took to social media to recount the terrifying experience of being awoken by police at 2 a.m. due to the arson attack on their residence. Fortunately, no injuries were reported, and the fire was extinguished, albeit causing significant damage to a portion of the mansion.

Before Balmer’s arrest, a $10,000 reward was offered for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the perpetrator. The incident was condemned by Pennsylvania Republican Party Chairman Greg Rothman, who called for swift justice if it was indeed a criminal act.

The National Governors Association (NGA) and the Democratic Governors Association also extended their support to the Shapiro family in the aftermath of the distressing event. Both organizations condemned the violence and emphasized the need for unity and civility in public discourse.
