Suspect carrying knife, Molotov cocktails charged with attempting to assassinate cabinet nominee
A shocking incident unfolded this week as a Massachusetts suspect was charged with attempting to assassinate a cabinet nominee, according to the U.S. Department of Justice. Ryan Michael English, 24, was apprehended in January after allegedly trying to sneak a knife and two improvised Molotov cocktails into the U.S. Capitol with the intention of assassinating then-Treasury Secretary nominee Scott Bessent during his nomination process.
The charges against English include attempted assassination of a cabinet member nominee and carrying a dangerous weapon on the U.S. Capitol Building premises. He made his first court appearance on Thursday afternoon.
In a disturbing revelation, prosecutors disclosed that English had also planned to kill House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth. His actions were reportedly inspired by the case of Luigi Mangione, a suspect in the murder of United HealthCare CEO.
On January 27, English approached a U.S. Capitol Police officer and voluntarily announced, “I’d like to turn myself in,” as per the initial charging documents. He admitted to possessing two Molotov cocktails and two knives, expressing his specific intent to target Scott Bessent. Additionally, English had set his sights on Hegseth, whom he derogatorily referred to as a “Nazi,” and Johnson, along with a plan to set fire to the Heritage Foundation, a conservative think tank located near the White House.
During a search, Capitol Police officers discovered a folding knife and two makeshift incendiary devices crafted from vodka bottles with a grey cloth attached to the top inside English’s jacket. A green lighter was also found in his possession.
