Swimming Canada CEO Ahmed El-Awadi steps down to pursue other opportunities
Ahmed El-Awadi Steps Down as CEO of Swimming Canada
After serving as the chief executive officer of Swimming Canada for nearly a decade, Ahmed El-Awadi has announced his decision to step down from his position. The governing body revealed on Wednesday that El-Awadi has chosen to pursue other opportunities and prioritize spending more time with his family.
El-Awadi first joined Swimming Canada as CEO in 2013, and under his leadership, the country has emerged as a formidable force in international swimming competitions. Canada, particularly on the women’s side, has consistently been a medal contender in the pool during his tenure.
One of the standout athletes to emerge during El-Awadi’s time at the helm is Toronto’s Summer McIntosh. McIntosh made a splash at the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris, clinching four medals – three gold and one silver. She has also amassed an impressive collection of seven long-course world championship medals, including four gold, one silver, and three bronze.
Several other swimmers have flourished under El-Awadi’s leadership as well. Penny Oleksiak, also from Toronto, has secured six Olympic medals, including a gold. Maggie Mac Neil from London, Ontario, has claimed three Olympic medals, including one gold, and seven short-course world titles. Kylie Masse of LaSalle, Ontario, has also been a standout performer with five Olympic medals and three world titles.
Reflecting on El-Awadi’s tenure, Swimming Canada past president Mary C. Lyne expressed gratitude for his contributions to the organization’s success. She commended him for his role in transforming Swimming Canada into a globally recognized leader in the sport, expanding the organization from a small staff of 10 to its current stature.
As El-Awadi steps down, Suzanne Paulins will continue to serve as the acting CEO of Swimming Canada. Paulins, who joined the organization’s staff in 2017 and became a director in 2021, will lead the organization during this transition period.
