US Election 2024

Swing Michigan House seat lands in Democratic column

Former Democratic Michigan State Rep. Kristen McDonald Rivet emerged victorious in the open race for Michigan’s 8th Congressional District, defeating former Trump administration official Paul Junge. According to the Associated Press, McDonald Rivet secured 51.25% of the votes with 217,390 votes, while Junge garnered 44.61% with 189,238 votes, with 98.68% reporting.

The election in Michigan’s 8th Congressional District was to fill the seat of retiring Rep. Dan Kildee, D-Mich., who has been in office since 2013. This race, along with the one in Michigan’s 7th Congressional District, was considered one of the most competitive in the nation.

McDonald Rivet centered her campaign on her deep local roots, contrasting Junge’s affluent background and portraying him as someone trying to purchase a seat in Congress. In an interview with the Detroit News in September, she emphasized her track record of community service and dedication to supporting schools and families, stating, “I have spent my life doing big things that helped our community, helped our schools and helped the economic stability of families.”

On the other hand, Junge positioned himself as an outsider capable of shaking up the Washington establishment. He highlighted the concentration of wealth in the D.C. area and emphasized the need to redirect resources to districts like Michigan’s 8th District. Junge told the Detroit News, “I share with people that five of the top seven counties in the United States of America for average income are all in and around Washington, D.C. To me, that’s an indicator that money flows to Washington and then stays here, instead of either not flowing to Washington, or having it be in places like Michigan’s 8th District.”

The campaign between McDonald Rivet and Junge was closely watched as a bellwether for the political landscape in Michigan and across the nation. With McDonald Rivet’s victory, the Democrats maintain control of the seat in Michigan’s 8th Congressional District.

As the dust settles on this closely contested race, both candidates have left their mark on the political arena, showcasing their contrasting visions for the future. The outcome of this election will undoubtedly have ripple effects on the political landscape in Michigan and beyond.
