Switzerland fencers turn away from Team Israel at fencing championship

The European Fencing Championship made headlines over the weekend due to a controversial protest against Team Israel during the medal ceremony. The incident took place in Tallinn, Estonia, where members of Switzerland’s silver medal-winning under-23 fencing team turned their backs to the Israeli gold medalists while Israel’s national anthem played.
Despite Israel’s victory over Switzerland with a score of 45-34, the protest drew condemnation from Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar. This is not the first time Israel’s fencing team has faced such protests, as evidenced by a previous incident involving Iraq’s national fencing team withdrawing from a match against Israel at the World Fencing Championship in Istanbul in May 2023.
The protest at the European Fencing Championship has sparked discussions about discrimination and political tensions within the sports world. FIFA’s disciplinary committee was even asked to look into allegations of discrimination against Team Israel following a request from the Palestinian soccer federation, the PFA. The PFA accused the Israeli federation IFA of complicity in violations of international law, discrimination against Arab players, and including clubs located in Palestinian territory in its league.
Despite the calls for suspension, FIFA did not take action against Israel. The IFA later issued a statement criticizing the PFA’s accusations and reaffirming its commitment to upholding FIFA/UEFA rules.
The incident at the European Fencing Championship serves as a reminder of the complex political dynamics that can often intersect with the world of sports. It also highlights the importance of promoting inclusivity and respect within the sporting community.
