Sydney drivers facing lengthy traffic tie-ups due to roadwork

Construction Projects Causing Traffic Headaches in Cape Breton Regional Municipality

Numerous construction projects are causing major traffic disruptions in Cape Breton Regional Municipality, leading to long lineups, frustrated drivers, and even some fender-benders.

Local landscaper John Kaytar expressed his frustration, stating that roadwork is necessary but causing significant delays. He recounted spending 45 minutes in traffic on his way back from a job site, with hauling times for topsoil increasing from one hour to 2½ hours.

Roadwork along Grand Lake Road is impacting travel between Sydney and Glace Bay, while the challenges in Sydney River include repaving sections of Highway 125 and construction of a new roundabout on Kings Road. Additionally, work on municipal water lines on George Street is further slowing down traffic entering Sydney.

Const. Gary Fraser of Cape Breton Regional Police highlighted the increase in accidents and impatient drivers due to the construction-related congestion. With more people on the roads enjoying the summer weather and parents shuttling their children to school, traffic has become a major concern.

Fraser urged drivers to remain patient, avoid distractions, and refrain from road rage. He emphasized the importance of exercising caution in construction zones and considering alternative routes to minimize delays.
